Strengthening Local Independent Co-ops Everywhere (SLICE) was conceived over Elysian Brewing Company beer among cooperators who identified an opportunity to promote sustainable regional cross-sectoral cooperative development.
October 16, 2009, Tatiana Cattand, Tora B. Hennessey, Derek Hoshiko, Caple Melton, Aaron Waldkoetter, and webster s. walker realized the first SLICE conference. Set in Seattle’s esteemed Hugo House, the event, underwritten by Central Co-op and Business Alliance for Local Living Economies Seattle (now Seattle Good Business Network), united greater than 100 cooperative enthusiasts who, together, examined cooperative philosophy, cooperative enterprise, cooperative community, and the Cooperative Movement.
In 2010, the conference was expanded to include a roundtable discussion concerning how to sustainably seed new, independent cooperative development in the Puget Sound region. Conference attendance doubled, and highlights included rousing keynotes and practical and philosophical workshop tracks.
